Klangtank
Soundsculpture

The Sound of Oil is a public sound sculpture. The consumption of fossil fuels is increasing steadily worldwide. The installation wants to create an awareness of our own oil consumption. It consists of a large, double cutaway, oil tank with a capacity of 20,000L.

In the tank, you hear a sound collage made up of field recordings. These recordings consist of a great variety of objects and actions, which are related to oil consumption (transport, plastic, textiles). Transducers direct the sound waves to the surface of the tank. Due to its architectural characteristics an unique ambient sound is created, which can develop an environmental awareness.
